1940 –1949 With the start of World War II in
1939, the world of fashion went to war with waste and frivolity.
Conservation and practicality being of uttermost importance clothing
designers had to use as little material yardage as possible. Hemlines were
shorter, skirts were often slender or boxy, having fewer gathers and
pleats. Jackets were shorter and more fitting than in the 1930’s. Detail
was in the cutting technique rather than in the yardage.
